Iowa Songstress’ Disney Musical Journey Falls Short
Last year, it was announced that a new movie would be released to help mark the Walt Disney company's 100th anniversary. Keeping in line with the theme of some of your favorite classic Disney movies, this story will focus on a wish...or rather a KINGDOM of wishes.
Aptly named 'Wish,' this is the studio's 62nd movie. It follows the story of 17-year-old Asha (played by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose) and a place called Rosas, according to reports.
“People come from everywhere to give their wishes to a magical king who promises to grant their deepest desires—someday. Only he can decide which wishes will come true and when.”
It was announced early in the process that Davenport native and five-time Grammy award nominee Julia Michaels would be writing music for the project.
The musician's flare and talent in the pop space came through loud and clear in the songs on this project. Most of them were catchy, but a few did seem to fall a bit flat.
Overall, the music checked off all of the boxes for a classic animated musical.
Michaels has become a main stay in the pop world with her collaborations with artists like Selena Gomez, Sabrina Carpenter, Benny Blanco, and Justin Bieber. Also, she's made space in the music world for herself with songs like 'Issues.'
She collaborated with fellow musician Benjamin Rice, and composer Dave Metzger, according to reports.
It was a slow start at the box office for this Disney movie. When the movie was released in theaters in November, it grossed $19.7 million in its opening weekend, which is low for the Disney empire.
It just recently passed $100 million worldwide, which is half of its $200 million production budget. Thus, it still has not broken even yet.
