Seafood lovers in Dubuque have a reason to celebrate: Laughing Crab is opening its doors at 1355 Associates Drive, after remodeling the entire former Carlos O’Kelly’s location. Known for its bold Cajun-inspired seafood, the restaurant promises a hands-on dining experience featuring seafood boils, po’boys, fried baskets, and savory appetizers. I even got to hang out at the ribbon cutting today(1/20/26), along with the owner and the Dubuque Chamber.

Owner Ying Yu said the decision to open in Dubuque came naturally. “Honestly, we have a couple locations in Iowa (Council Bluffs, West Des Moines) already, and they’re doing really well. Since we found out there is no similar restaurant in this area, we decided to bring our Cajun boil food to the community."

Laughing Crab’s menu goes beyond the classic Cajun seafood boil. Diners can choose from shrimp, crab, crawfish, mussels, clams, and lobster, paired with corn, potatoes, sausage, and their preferred spice level for a hands-on feast.

The restaurant also serves crispy fried baskets, loaded po’boys, and savory appetizers like Cajun wings, hush puppies, and fried calamari. With a full bar offering cocktails, wine, and beer, there’s something for every appetite and occasion.

The soft-opening is set for Thursday, January 22nd, with hours from 11 AM to 10 PM. Once fully established, guests can enjoy dine-in, takeout, and delivery via DoorDash, Uber, and Manify. The Laughing Crab also offers a full bar with cocktails, wine, and beer.

Yu highlighted the restaurant’s signature feature: “The main part is boiled seafood with different seasonings and spice levels. We’re always posting specials or promotions on our social media.” To celebrate the opening, the restaurant is offering a promotion: spend $100 and get a $120 gift card.

Looking ahead, Yu said, “We just want to keep bringing fresh seafood and serve the community, and just try our best.” With its fun and energetic atmosphere, flavorful menu, plus the family-friendly vibe, Laughing Crab is poised to be a standout addition to Dubuque’s dining scene.
