Massive Iowa Snowstorm is Exactly What Parents and Kids Need
I love Iowa — one day it’s 50 degrees and sunny, and the next, you’re digging your car out of a massive snowdrift while wondering, "how much more snow can I fit next to my driveway?" But let’s be honest—this massive incoming snowstorm isn’t just a winter inconvenience. I mean it is, but let's flip the script and think of it more as a chaotic, unexpected break that both you and your kids desperately need.
I'm not kidding! For parents, it could be a forced pause from the endless to-do lists, after school activities, and dreaded teacher emails (Now what did you do!?). And for kids, it’s a free pass to transform the backyard into a snow fortress, pelt their siblings with snowballs (with zero consequences), and drink obscene amounts of hot chocolate. Parents, you are totally ok to go for it too! Listen, it's really not going to be safe for travel if we get the dreaded 6 to 9 inches we've been hearing about. Besides, no one else is going to be out in that insanity anyway, so why don't we just all SHUT IT DOWN!
I get that you may still have to work from home (this guy right here), but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take some time for yourself and your kids. So instead of dreading the incoming whiteout conditions, grab a blanket, embrace the madness, and let’s talk about why this storm is the best thing to hit Iowa since deep-fried Oreos (or Snickers) at the state fair. Here's a list to get you started on your snow day activities.
Cozy Indoor Activities
Hot Cocoa & Blanket Fort – nothing beats hot chocolate when it's nasty outside. Did I mention that it tastes even better when enjoyed in the comfort of your very own fort. Trust me, it doesn't take much convincing to get your kids to build one.
Read a Book – Get lost in a novel amongst the flurries outside. Sitting down with a favorite, classic, or series is a must-do. Light the candles and hop into that latest Christmas gift you've been putting off. You've got time now.
Movie (or TV) Marathon – Watch winter classics like Home Alone or The Day After Tomorrow. Even better, now's the time to rip through those series: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit. Maybe there's something you've been meaning to stream with several episodes. Snowstorms may just be the best days to stay on the couch and binge watch!
Video or Board Games – Have a friendly competition with the family or roommates. This one gets my vote. Whether you're cranking out matches in Fortnite, Madden, or COD or placing that extra hotel on Boardwalk; games can be a great way to get in some quality time... and find out just how ruthless your children really are.
Bake Something Warm – I'm so spoiled because my wife is amazing when it comes to this one. Cookies, brownies, fresh bread! They're all perfect for a cold day. Heck, even if you're not a baker maybe try it out. You may just surprise yourself with one of the tastiest things you've ever eaten!
Journaling, Writing, or Planning – Reflect, plan, or start that creative project you've been putting off. Snow days are made for planning ahead. Have a vacation in mind? Start the process now and get it figured out for some much needed, future PTO.
DIY Crafts or Painting – Get creative with arts & crafts. Kids love coloring? Do it with them. Sometimes the coolest things are borne from boredom, or a forced day indoors.
At-Home Spa Day – Face masks, a warm bath, and self-care time. This ones for the ladies (or fellas). Sometimes you just need a break. So run the bath, grab a glass of wine, light a candle, and put on your favorite tunes. Your mind will thank you for a break from whatever chaos is befalling your driveway and yard outside.
Make a Hearty Meal – Cook comfort food like soup, chili, or mac & cheese. I vote chili and cornbread on this one. You don't really need a reason, but a snowstorm is a good one.

Chaotic Outdoor Fun
Build a Snowman or Igloo – Classic and fun for all ages. The snow may not be right for this one, but your kids will love the effort and the time you spend with them.
Go Sledding or Snowboarding – If you have a hill nearby, take advantage of it! My back yard was made for this, and my kids take full advantage anytime there is a snow day. I guess I'm just going to have to join them this time!
Take a Snowy Walk or Hike – Enjoy the peaceful, fresh snowfall. Listen, no one is out driving anyway so enjoy the peace and quite while getting in a little bundled up exercise. Bonus if you can do it at night and check out what's become of your town in the aftermath. If you live in the country, you won't even have to look out for snowplows!
Snowball Fight – The ultimate winter battle. Put all that snow to good use... as ammo!
Spray-Paint the Snow – Fill spray bottles with colored water for snow art. The guy below is a bit much, but he can explain how you can make this happen for the kids. Yes it totally works.
Winter Photography – Capture the beauty of a snowstorm. Bonus points if you can find a bright red cardinal to star in your pics.
Backyard Fire Pit & S'mores – Stay warm outside with some roasted marshmallows. I get that we're in a burn ban in some counties, but once the ground is covered in snow, it's unlikely that you'll be starting any all-consuming fires. Just be cautious and enjoy the sweet, crispy goodness of a perfectly toasted mallow.
No matter what you decide to do during this day of expected and extended snow, hopefully it's fulfilling and enjoyable. To be honest it should be, it's not like we've had a ton of snow to deal with this winter. Maybe this storm will be just enough to let your worries "drift-over" for the day. No matter what, those daily duties will still be waiting for you tomorrow, or the next day, so take a day off on account of the weather.
