As we roll through October, it’s time to celebrate a week that holds a special place in the hearts of many young people, families, and communities across the nation, including my own: National 4-H Week. This year, from today, October 6th, to Friday the 12th, 4-H clubs across the country are coming together under the theme "Beyond Ready" to introduce even more youth to this incredible program that focuses on leadership, personal growth, and giving back.

I recently had the chance to sit down with Kelsie Kinne, the Dubuque County Youth Coordinator for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, to discuss the exciting events planned for National 4-H Week, as well as the broader impact 4-H has on young people. For me, 4-H is more than just a name—I grew up on a farm, and my experience showing hogs, participating in projects, and joining in 4-H events played a huge role in shaping who I am today. It was more than just learning about agriculture; it was about developing skills that I now use in my everyday life.

As Kelsie explained during our conversation, National 4-H Week is packed with activities that encourage kids to get involved, discover new interests, and develop important life skills. The goal is to open the door for youth to join 4-H and grow in ways they might not have expected. Here’s a glimpse of what’s happening throughout the week:

Today! Monday, October 7 – Chalk the Walk: The week kicks off with a creative challenge! Kids are encouraged to grab some chalk and create 4-H-themed designs on their sidewalks or driveways. It’s a fun way for families to get involved, show their 4-H pride, and submit photos of their artwork for a chance to win prizes.

Tuesday, October 8 – Give Back Tuesday: 4-H clubs are rolling up their sleeves to give back to the community. Whether it's helping out at a local shelter or organizing a neighborhood cleanup, this day is dedicated to showing the impact 4-H members can make through community service projects.

Wednesday, October 9 – Wear Green Wednesday: It’s time to show off your 4-H pride! Kelsie mentioned that everyone—whether they’re current 4-H members, alumni, or just supporters—is encouraged to wear green or a 4-H shirt. It’s a simple yet powerful way to spread awareness about the program.

Thursday, October 10 – 4-H Find Out Night: This might be the most exciting event of the week, especially for families and kids curious about joining 4-H. The Dubuque County Extension Office will host a night of hands-on activities for kids while parents attend an informative session to learn more about the program. Kelsie emphasized how important it is for kids to get a taste of what 4-H offers beyond agriculture. 4-H is a gateway to discovering new passions and learning new things.

Friday, October 11 – Beyond Ready Challenge: Wrapping up the week, 4-H members will take on a creative challenge posted on the Dubuque Extension Office’s Facebook page. This activity is all about thinking critically and developing innovative solutions to community problems—a perfect way to demonstrate the skills 4-H instills in its members.

Check out my full interview with Kelsie below:

While agriculture is often associated with 4-H, the program goes far beyond that. As someone who learned firsthand about sustainability, responsibility, and hard work through 4-H, I can say that it has shaped my understanding of not only farming but also life in general. Kelsie highlighted that there’s so much more to 4-H than people might realize. Yes, there are opportunities to work with livestock and crops, but there’s also a world of activities like woodworking, communication development, and even sports—like the 4-H basketball I used to play.

Kelsie shared her own experience growing up in 4-H, where she learned valuable life skills that she continues to use today. "I see the benefits of 4-H every day," she told me. "It teaches responsibility, helps kids build connections, and allows them to discover what they're passionate about. It's so much more than just an agriculture program."

For kids, joining a 4-H club means finding like-minded friends, building lifelong connections, and learning how to work with others—skills that will help them not just in school, but throughout their careers. And for adults, there are plenty of ways to get involved, whether as a volunteer, a club leader, or even a judge at the County Fair.

One of the things that makes 4-H so special is its inclusivity. There’s something for everyone, regardless of their background or interests. As Kelsie pointed out, the Dubuque County Extension Office is offering a variety of workshops throughout the year, including sewing and thrifting workshops that teach kids how to manage their money sustainably. These workshops are just another way 4-H helps prepare youth for the future by equipping them with practical, hands-on skills. The skills kids learn in 4-H—whether it’s through workshops, projects, or community service—are life lessons that will serve them well into the future.
