In a move that’s drawing some serious concern from community members and health advocates alike, Walgreens is continuing its recently announced massive wave of store closures across the nation. This is hitting the Midwest particularly hard in Illinois and Wisconsin, as well as a few communities in Iowa.

Walgreens, one of the largest pharmacy chains in the U.S., is accelerating its multi-year plan to close 1,500 locations nationwide by the end of 2027, with many closing this year. The most recent closures begin this month (June) in Chicago and disproportionately affect urban and underserved communities. This leaves residents scrambling to find nearby alternatives for prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and the basic health care services that some Walgreens offer.

Chicago is seeing a significant share of these closures. The loss of yet another South Side Walgreens this month underscores the trend. Many of these locations once served as the only convenient pharmacy within walking distance for seniors and families without reliable transportation. There have also been health clinic closures associated with these mass shutdowns.

Wisconsin Walgreens Closures Hit Milwaukee Hard

Wisconsin has also been hit with a major wave of closures—especially in Milwaukee, where at least six stores have already shuttered since late 2024. Several more in suburban and rural areas have been confirmed for upcoming shutdowns, raising concerns about health equity and access in these regions. Confirmed Wisconsin locations that will close:

  • 5201 N 91st St, Milwaukee, WI 53225

Iowa: Fewer Walgreen Stores, But Still Impacted

Iowa, while not hit as hard numerically, is still losing key locations in Des Moines and Davenport. The closures are particularly problematic in city centers, where Walgreens previously offered 24-hour access and urgent care-adjacent services. Confirmed Iowa locations that will close:

  • 606 Walnut St, Des Moines, IA 50309
  • 1805 Brady St, Davenport, IA 52803

As Walgreens continues its mass shutdowns across the United States, the closures have become more than just a corporate or financial move; they're a growing public health concern. In many of these neighborhoods, especially in urban and rural pockets, these pharmacies are more than JUST stores. They’re lifelines for underserved urban and rural areas. With hundreds more closures expected by 2027, residents, local leaders, and healthcare advocates are calling for greater accountability and alternative solutions to ensure communities aren’t left behind in the fallout. People need consistent access to their medications, and this is a major blow to many Tri-State communities.
