Officer Involved Incident Leaves One Dead in Shullsburg, WI
According to a press release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation, (DCI) they are currently investigating an officer-involved critical incident that occurred in the early hours of Monday, February 12th, in the City of Shullsburg, Wisconsin.
The incident unfolded when the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call reporting a subject behaving erratically on West Water Street near North Iowa Street.
Upon arrival, law enforcement found the individual yelling and wandering in the street. Despite attempts to make contact and deploy non-lethal means to subdue the subject, they continued to physically resist and then fled from officers. Following a pursuit, law enforcement eventually detained the subject, who continued to resist and became distressed. Life-saving measures were administered on-site before emergency medical services (EMS) transported the individual to a local hospital, where they were later pronounced deceased.
Notably, no law enforcement officers sustained injuries during the incident. The involved officer from the Darlington Police Department and two Lafayette County Sheriff's Office deputies have been placed on administrative duty, adhering to department policy. Additionally, both body cameras worn by the officers and squad car cameras have captured footage of the event.
DCI is leading the investigation, supported by various agencies, including the Shullsburg Police Department, Lafayette County Coroner's Office, Lafayette County EMS, Shullsburg EMS, and Wisconsin State Patrol. All cooperating entities are working closely with DCI to review evidence and determine the facts of the case. Upon conclusion, DCI will provide investigative reports to the Lafayette County District Attorney for further action. For media inquiries, the Wisconsin DOJ is the designated point of contact.
