If you recently bought tomatoes from a Gordon Food Service Store, you will want to check the brand and store. Ray & Mascari Inc., a company based in Indianapolis, is recalling its 4 Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes due to a possible Salmonella contamination. These tomatoes were sold in plastic clamshell containers weighing 20 ounces and labeled with UPC# 7 96553 20062 1. The affected lot numbers are RM250424 15250B and RM250427 15250B.

According to the FDA, this recall was triggered after Hanshaw & Capling Farms in Florida (the original supplier) reported possible Salmonella at their facility. Ray & Mascari received those tomatoes and repackaged them for sale. As a result, they’re pulling the affected tomatoes from shelves across 11 states, including in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Salmonella can become a serious issue. While healthy people may only experience fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps (isn't that bad enough?!), it can be much worse for young children, the elderly, or anyone with a weaker immune system. In some rare cases, it can even lead to severe infections like endocarditis or arthritis.

No illnesses have been reported as of this recall, but officials are urging customers to take it seriously, as it has been issued as a Class 1 recall. If you have these tomatoes at home, don’t eat them, just throw them out. For questions or if you think you've gotten sick from eating them, you can call Ray & Mascari Inc. at 1-317-637-0234. If you have eaten these tomatoes and feel ill, please seek medical attention immediately, especially if you are an at-risk group mentioned above. It’s always frustrating to toss out food, but safety comes first.
