The Comedy Bar’s Tomato Throw Show Delivers Curveball Humor
In an upsidedown world, what can a person do to stay sane besides drink a beer in a basement and toss tomatoes at fledgling yet sometimes funny open-mic comedians?
That's what I did last Thursday night at Dubuque's Millwork District underground humor hotspot known as The Comedy Bar.
Some jokes hit the target at The Comedy Bar's Tomato Throw Show on Thursdays, while others fell wide of the mark. And that's the way it went with the audience members tossing their red tomatoes at the bombing comedians. Some hit spot on while others missed by a country mile.
I was in my "if it's free, it's for me" mode when I saw the ad offering the no-cost opportunity to toss tomatoes at willing stand-up comics. So I went to The Comedy Bar for the audience participation event.
The comedy club staff brings an endless supply of spongelike tomatoes to your table, and I'm happy to share that it is an absolute hoot and a lot of fun for everyone, including the brave joke tellers on stage.
Dubuque's Comedy Bar has all the essentials for a superb comedy club experience. First, it's subterranean, which sometimes complements the scatological humor. The small stage with hip background is lit well with good sound and is close to the audience to create an authentic and intimate interaction.
I cannot vouch for all of their comedy shows, but if Thursday's Tomato Throw Show is an indicator, it's a safe bet that they're good for several laughs. However, be forewarned that it's also adult content and may not be best suited for the easily offended crowd.
My big takeaway from the show, if you can handle rude, crude, and raw humor, don't miss out, and be sure to get a good seat so you can toss your tomatoes unobstructed at the bobbing, weaving, sometimes funny, and steadfast stand-up comics.
P.S. I apologize to any audience member I may have unintentionally hit on the head with a wayward tomato.
