In a startling move, Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) and Prevea Health jointly declared the permanent closure of HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls, and all Prevea Health locations in Western Wisconsin’s Chippewa Valley. This decision reflects a complete exit from the Western Wisconsin region and carries significant implications for local communities and the healthcare landscape.

The closures, expected to conclude on or before April 21st of 2024, are a response to prolonged operational and financial stress, compounded by the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, workforce constraints, local market challenges, and broader industry trends. This decision aligns with a nationwide trend of rural hospital closures, indicating the mounting challenges faced by healthcare providers in rural areas.

With over a century of service, HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital and HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital have been cherished institutions in the region, providing healthcare ministry for more than 140 years. Prevea Health, founded in 1996, has been a vital provider primary and specialty care across Eastern and Western Wisconsin.

Approximately 1,082 HSHS and 325 Prevea colleagues and physicians will be affected. However, both entities say they are committed to offering support services and career transition assistance to impacted individuals, including potential placement in other roles within the organizations.

In Chippewa Falls, Mayor Greg Hoffman has expressed his disappointment, noting there was a lack of prior communication with area officials about the closures. Concerns have also been raised about the capacity of the remaining hospitals in Eau Claire to handle the increased demand for emergency services and day-to-day medical needs. The closures raise questions about the accessibility and continuity of care for residents.

Prevea Health CEO, Dr. Ashok Rai, acknowledged the impact on patients in the Chippewa Valley and emphasized their commitment to ensuring continuity of care. Efforts are underway to transition patients to other area hospitals and providers, and both HSHS and Prevea have initiated a thorough and organized process to safely wind down services.

The decision to exit the Western Wisconsin region follows extensive exploration of alternatives, including seeking a suitable partner. However, the lack of a strategic agreement led to the conclusion that exiting the market was the only feasible path forward.

As part of the closure process, Prevea Health has provided a list of the health centers and clinics set to close, urging patients to reach out with any questions about their care or upcoming procedures. Patients are encouraged to contact (833) 344-4373 for Prevea and (888) 307-7099 for HSHS if they have concerns or need assistance during this transition.
