In April, Wisconsin voters will decide whether to amend the state constitution to require photographic identification at the polls — ALL voting polls, for ALL elections. The proposed amendment, advanced by the Republican-controlled Legislature, would elevate the state’s current voter ID law, in place since 2011, to constitutional status.

Under the amendment, voters would need to present valid photo identification issued by the state, federal government, a federally recognized tribal entity, or a college or university in Wisconsin. The Legislature would define acceptable forms of ID and could establish exceptions to the requirement.

The amendment also includes provisions for provisional voting. Voters without ID on election day could cast a provisional ballot, which would only be counted if they later present valid identification at a designated time and location.

Supporters argue that embedding voter ID requirements into the constitution is a necessary step to safeguard election security and prevent potential legal challenges. They contend that this measure reflects public support for voter ID laws and ensures consistent enforcement, regardless of future political shifts or court rulings.

Critics, however, view the proposal as unnecessary since the current voter ID law is already being enforced. They argue that such measures disproportionately affect marginalized communities, including people of color, low-income individuals, and those with disabilities, by creating barriers to voting. Opponents also suggest that lawmakers should focus on other pressing issues, rather than pursuing constitutional changes for policies already in effect.

If approved, the amendment would make it significantly more difficult for future legislatures or courts to alter Wisconsin’s voter ID requirements. However, it would not fundamentally change current voting procedures, as provisional ballots and legislative control over ID types would remain intact.

The amendment will appear on the ballot alongside other important issues, including a state Supreme Court race that could determine the court’s ideological balance. As Wisconsin prepares for this pivotal vote, the proposal highlights the ongoing national debate over election security and voter access.
