YUM! Donuts and Ice Cream Unite in Dubuque
After a full week away from Radio traveling through the Rockies (more pics to come), it was great to be back in Dubuque. In fact, I managed to make it back to Iowa just in time to catch the final day of free fishing weekend.
My girls wanted a lazy day at home after the nearly 30 miles of hiking in Colorado, so my wife, son, and I headed to Dubuque for fishing at the Mines of Spain area and Catfish Creek.
I caught the only fish, a Sheepshead a.k.a. the Freshwater Drum, out of Catfish Creek, but the day was full of Dubuque beauty with snakes, turtles, and loads of wildlife to enjoy.
It was a bright sunny day, and this is where the title of my article comes in. What do you do after 4 hours in the sun fishing? That's right! You go for ice cream. Usually, we would go to Dairy Queen, hit up Wendy's for a frosty, or maybe a McFlurry if they could ever keep the ice cream machines working... but I digress, today's trip was more eventful and full of "flavor" as my family discovered a new icy, sweet-treat location in Dubuque.
As a kid each weekend I had to travel to Cedar Rapids for allergy shots and every time we drove by a place called Baskin-Robins: you know, the one that boasts 31 flavors of ice cream (I think they are well past 31 flavors now...). I always begged to stop, because who wouldn't want to try 31 flavors of ice cream? We never did stop, but now Dubuque has one right here in Plaza 20.
What was once just a Dunkin' Donuts, is now a half-and-half store featuring that childhood elusive 31 flavors. So, we had to stop for a cold treat.
Amidst the many different flavors, my son opted for a new movie-inspired flavor called Blossom's Berry Twirl: Strawberry & Sweet Cream Ice Creams with Rainbow Sprinkles & pink Sugar Cookie Dough Pieces. My wife grabbed a Cookie Monster: Sweet Cream Ice Cream stuffed with Chocolate Sandwich Cookie Pieces, Chocolate Chip Cookie Pieces & Cookie Dough batter-flavored Swirls.
I went for the other movie-inspired (If) flavor called Blue's Boardwalk Bash, and it did not disappoint. Blue Raspberry flavored Ice Cream with OREO Cookie Pieces & blue Cotton Candy Swirls. YUM! It was the perfect treat to end an even better day out with my boy and wife.
That being said there is one catch, 3 sugar cone, single scoop ice creams will run you just over $13. So that's a little over $4 bucks a scoop. Yes, there are more economical choices when it comes to ice cream in Dubuque, but if you're looking for what I would call a more decadent treat, Baskin-Robbins has the flavors! And while you're there, make sure to grab some donuts for breakfast the next day.
And did I mention, they also offer ice cream cakes and other goodies for at home later? Curious about Iowa's favorite flavor? Check it out here!
