Child Killed in Lafayette County Wisconsin Crash Involving Horse And Buggy
In a tragic accident in Lafayette County, a child lost their life, and five other individuals sustained injuries when a pickup truck collided with an Amish buggy. The heartbreaking event occurred in Darlington Township at approximately 7pm on Sunday (10/8) evening.
According to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department, the child was pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of those involved have not yet been disclosed per the initial press release. The occupants of the buggy included a family consisting of two parents and four children. The pickup truck struck the buggy from behind while they were both traveling along Wisconsin 81.
The impact of the collision was severe, leading to multiple injuries. The parents and three of the children were transported to hospitals for medical attention, with one child being airlifted to UW Health Hospitals and Clinics via MedFlight. Even the horse that was pulling the buggy suffered minor injuries and was later found at a nearby farm. The driver of the pickup truck escaped the accident unscathed.
The horse-drawn buggy was demolished, and the pickup truck sustained significant damage in the crash. At the scene, the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department received assistance from the Darlington police and fire departments, as well as Lafayette, Shullsburg, and Belmont EMS services.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the exact circumstances and causes of the crash. This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety and adherence to traffic regulations. Harvest season also brings out heavy machinery like combines and tractors that are often rear ended when involved in an on-road accident.
