Dubuque Landfill Construction Alert: Prepare For Delays

Hey Dubuque residents! Get ready for some changes at the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency (DMASWA) landfill. Starting April 22nd, a major construction project kicks off at the entrance, and it’s going to affect how you handle your waste for about twelve weeks.

First up, traffic is going to be a bit of a headache. With only one lane open during the project, you can expect some serious wait times at the scale. So, if you’re planning a trip to the landfill, brace yourself and maybe consider chatting with your local collection provider about options for picking up large or bulky items. Anything to avoid sitting in traffic, right?

But wait, there’s more! The Regional Collection Center is going to feel the impact too. Household hazardous materials and electronics recycling programs are hitting pause for the duration of the construction. So, if you’ve got any hazardous materials or old gadgets lying around, schedule an appointment pronto through the Agency’s website before April 22nd.

The last time updates were made at the facility it was all thanks to some changes from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). DMASWA had been composting food scraps and yard waste without a hitch for over a decade. But, in January of 2023, the DNR stated they needed a different permit to keep doing that. DMASWA’s along with SCS Engineers have since upgraded their composting facility, as of January 19th of this year. This made sure they stayed compliant and kept serving the community’s waste needs.
