The trip takes you through some of the many state parks on the Eastern side of the state, basically following the Mississippi all the way up to the top of the state.
Bellevue State Park
Bellevue State Park features a highly elevated lookout area, but the drive to get there is up a steep and winding beautiful road, surrounded and covered overhead by trees. You'll see an unbelievable amount of color in a short amount of time.
Saint Donatus
This town shows off a view that looks like the type of painting or picture you'd find in a fancy hotel. The church featured in the photo is the town's icon.
Dubuque
If you haven't been to Dubuque, you're sitting right in a spot along the river that features beautiful rock ridges, and a view of three states at once.
Guttenburg
Guttenburg, Iowa is nestled within limestone bluffs, which are gorgeous anytime of year. Pair that with the beautiful fall foliage along your drive.
Pikes Peak State Park
This state park is a great place to get out and stretch your legs. A high-up overlook of the Mississippi River will allow you to see the river traffic, the changing colors of the trees along the islands in the river, and there's a short 20 minute hike around through the wooded area that features some waterfalls as well.
Effigy Mounds National Monument
Effigy Mounds National Monument features mounds built by the Native Americans who once lived there. The mounds are shaped like animals, like birds and bears. There are over 200 mounds, and the park has an overlook to the river.
