Illinois is investing over $60 million to upgrade state parks and historic sites as part of Governor Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois plan. According to the Illinois DNR, these improvements plan to address long-overdue maintenance of publicly enjoyed spaces, making sure these outdoor areas remain safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all visitors.

One of the biggest projects is at Starved Rock State Park, where over $33 million will go toward upgrading trails, replacing aging facilities, and installing a new wastewater system to protect the environment. Starved Rock State Park is an amazing place to adventure. In fact, just last year my wife and I put in around 8 miles along the trails, canyons, and bluffs there.

Thats not the only place seeing upgrades and restoration. Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park will receive $10.2 million to restore Lock 33 near Rock Falls. The goal being to preserve its historic structure while keeping it fully operational.

In southern Illinois, Lake Murphysboro State Park will see $4.1 million in upgrades, including improvements to sewage treatment and campground electrical systems to meet modern environmental and accessibility standards for guests. Meanwhile, the Dana-Thomas House in Springfield will undergo nearly $7.4 million in restorations, including roofing repairs, water management updates, and security enhancements to preserve its architectural integrity. The Dana-Thomas house is a state historic site designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Volo Bog Natural Area in Lake County will also receive $5.1 million to replace its aging boardwalk and floating trail, making the site more accessible for visitors. The observation platform at the "Eye of the Bog" scenic overlook will also be upgraded, improving the experience for all. This place has now officially piqued my interest, and I may find myself planning a trip to explore the bog in Ingleside, IL.

The Capital Development Board, or CDB, will oversee these projects. The oversight hopes to ensure projects meet environmental and historic preservation standards. These investments hope to not only enhance public spaces and use, while also supporting local economies by boosting tourism to these historic and natural sites. It's clear Rebuild Illinois has one goal in mind: that communities across the state will benefit from safer, more sustainable outdoor spaces for many years to come.
