The Dubuque Community School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Valerie Loewenberg as principal of the Dubuque Online School, the district’s new fully online school for students in grades 6-12, pending approval by the Board of Education at its May meeting.

 Loewenberg currently serves as an educational support leader in the district overseeing the district’s current middle school virtual learning program, serving as lead middle school instructional coach, and leading the district’s mentoring and induction program for new teachers.

As principal of the Dubuque Online School, Loewenberg will lead the strategic and day-to-day operations of the school, which will officially begin this fall for the 2022-2023 school year.

Amy Hawkins, the district’s chief human resources officer and superintendent-elect said:

 Val has been embedded in the district’s work to provide high-quality online instruction over the past two years,” “She is committed to strong student and family relationships, excellent communication, and strong instructional practices to ensure that the new Dubuque Online School provides an exceptional learning experience to students desiring that learning model.

Loewenberg has been in her current educational support leader role since 2015, progressively assuming additional responsibilities. She began as a district mentor in 2015 and assumed leadership of the mentoring and induction program for new teachers in 2017. In 2018, she became the lead middle school instructional coach and in 2020 began overseeing middle school online education.

Prior to her leadership role at the district level, Loewenberg served as a sixth-grade teacher at Marshall Elementary School from 2004-2005, a sixth-grade teacher at Jefferson Middle School from 2005-2006, and a fourth-/fifth-grade loop teacher at Prescott Elementary School from 2007-2015. During that time, she was also a building-based mentor, a member of the Prescott Building Leadership Team, and a cooperating teacher overseeing student-teaching of undergraduate and graduate pre-service teachers.

Loewenberg holds a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Loras College and a master of arts in education degree from the University of Northern Iowa with PreK-12 Special Education Supervisor and PreK-12 Administrator endorsements.
