Recreational Marijuana in Illinois may soon arrive at the front door via delivery services, according to a recent statement from Governor J.B. Pritzker.

Pritzker signed the bill legalizing recreational marijuana in his state on June 25, 2019. With dozens of dispensaries now operational, this past week, the governor signaled that people in Illinois might soon not even have to leave home to get their cannabis supply.

Like many governments with the munchies for easy revenue, dispensary licensing fees and sales tax revenue generate hundreds of millions in annual revenue for Illinois. No wonder Pritzker takes a why worry approach to expanding a lucrative Illinois industry from the dispensary to your front door as long as it is "regulated" by the state.

"I think that as long as it is regulated, as long as we make sure that the person who is ordering it gets it, and that they're legally allowed to, then it would seem to me like the same as somebody coming into a store," said Governor J.B. Pritzker at a recent event marking the launch of dispensary operations for social equity license holders.

Home delivery may be a convenient way to avoid visiting and purchasing the product at a dispensary. Thinking also of the immobile or clients who know precisely the product they want may prefer the convenience of home delivery.

However, just as likely, most dispensaries would have to outsource the delivery service as it is an entirely different industry. In addition, ensuring that countless rules and regulations are followed will likely prove difficult as it is costly.

The Illinois marijuana tax is 25%, so it will be interesting to see if consumers are willing to add a delivery fee to the expensive cost of cannabis.

Today, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, and Oregon are the only states where cannabis delivery is legal. Illinois may soon be added to the list.
